E-I-E-I-O!

Capital Harvest on the Plaza Farm Market Returns May 7 to Federal Triangle’s Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center

WASHINGTON, D.C. --The Capital Harvest on the Plaza farmers market is set to open for the season Friday, May 7, at noon, on the Woodrow Wilson Plaza of the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, at 1300 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W. The Market will be open every Friday from noon to 5 p.m. through the season.

Every week, the Capital Harvest on the Plaza farmers market will feature fresh local produce, artisanal producers, live music, and celebrity chef cooking demonstrations. The market is free and open to the public.

“We are quite excited about bringing this farmers market to the Federal Triangle,” said John P. Drew, president and CEO of Trade Center Management Associates. “The Market has a new slogan this year, e-i-e-i-o! This slogan captures what the market is about: connecting the growers and producers directly to the consumer, in a high-energy, fun environment that also educates consumers about healthy living and going green. It’s a win-win situation for the farmers, producers, and consumers.”

“The Market has several goals,” said Jeremy Downs, Director of the International Trade Center, U.S. General Services Administration. “The Market aims to educate, inform, and entertain in a beautiful, communal outdoor setting.”

The Capital Harvest on the Plaza farmers market gives farmers, producers, crafters and artisans from around the Chesapeake region the opportunity to sell their high-quality wares directly to the consumer at affordable prices. The Market is more than a place to shop: It’s a place to learn about living a healthy lifestyle that starts with eating high-quality, locally grown food. Every week, local celebrity chefs will demonstrate dishes inspired by the produce available at the Market--and consumers will be able to taste these creations and take home the recipes. The Market is also a place to learn about going green: A Market Booth will be stocked with a variety of educational materials about healthy eating, composting, organic foods--even menus featuring quick-and-easy dinner ideas using ingredients from the Market. Complete with live entertainment every week, the Market is a fun place to shop, socialize with people from the community, and learn about being green.

Participating vendors include: Santa Lucia Estate Coffee; MeatCrafters; Take Home by Anna Saint John; Hawks Hill Creamery; All Things Olive; Gun Powder Bison and Trading Company; Firefly Farms; The Breadery; Lingenfelter Seafood; Nuts…to You!; Tuckey’s Mountain Grown; Ayrshire Farm; Floradise Orchids; Original Kettle Korn of Maryland; Hickory Chance Beef; Savory Soups; Edible Favors; Lois’s Produce; and Panoramic Bakery.

Capital Harvest on the Plaza is another free activation event co-sponsored by the U.S.

General Services Administration and Trade Center Management Associates. The project, designed to help enliven downtown D.C., joins Live! on Woodrow Wilson Plaza, the building’s free concert series which opens its 2010 season in June.

The Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center brings together federal, state and regional trade resources, and international trade-related businesses and services to demonstrate that the United States recognizes the importance of trade in linking countries and communities. This mission, along with the program’s goal to activate the Federal Triangle area of downtown Washington, D.C., has made the RRB/ITC a destination for international visitors, tourists, and the local community.
